Self-control and stolen glances
L’obiettivo inquadra la vita che scorre sul pavé di Piazza Bra, con il profilo imponente dell’Arena a fare da sfondo. Sulla destra, quattro turiste si stringono per scattarsi un selfie, immortalando un ricordo gioioso. Sul lato sinistro, in primo piano, camminano due agenti della polizia locale durante il servizio di pattugliamento. Nel muoversi verso il centro della piazza, i due vigili girano contemporaneamente la testa, attratti dalla vivacità del gruppo.
Lo sguardo di chi osserva questa fotografia in bianco e nero coglie da un lato la compostezza istituzionale degli agenti in divisa, seri e attenti nel controllare il territorio, dall’altro la spensieratezza delle amiche, totalmente immerse nella propria bolla di allegria e distanti da qualsiasi formalità. Questa contrapposizione si fa evidente mettendo a confronto il volto severo dei vigili con la smorfia divertita della turista verso la fotocamera del suo smartphone.
Mostrando i due agenti che si voltano, lo scatto ferma un istante in cui viene spontaneo chiedersi cosa passi per la loro testa. Un dubbio che accorcia le distanze perché atteggiamenti apparentemente opposti a volte sono separati solo da un confine sottile. Sotto la divisa, e dietro quella serietà istituzionale, l’umanità di fondo resta infatti la stessa. Piazza Bra diventa così il palcoscenico reale di un piccolo contrasto quotidiano, dove la rigidità del dovere incrocia la leggerezza della vita.

The lens captures life flowing on the cobblestones of Piazza Bra, with the imposing profile of the Arena serving as a backdrop. On the right, four tourists huddle together to take a selfie, capturing a joyful memory. On the left side, in the foreground, two local police officers walk during their patrol service. Moving towards the center of the square, the two officers simultaneously turn their heads, drawn by the liveliness of the group.
The gaze of those observing this black and white photograph captures, on one hand, the institutional composure of the officers in uniform, serious and attentive in monitoring the area, and on the other, the lightheartedness of the friends, totally immersed in their own bubble of joy and distant from any formality. This contrast becomes evident when comparing the stern faces of the officers with the amused expression of the tourist towards her smartphone camera.
By showing the two officers turning around, the shot freezes a moment in which it comes naturally to wonder what is crossing their minds. A question that shortens distances because seemingly opposite attitudes are sometimes separated only by a fine line. Beneath the uniform, and behind that institutional seriousness, the underlying humanity remains the same. Piazza Bra thus becomes the real stage for a small daily contrast, where the rigidity of duty crosses paths with the lightness of life.
