Ricoh Gr2, GR3, GR4… Da quando ho scoperto la Ricoh GR non mi sono perso un modello di questa fotocamera nata per la Street Photography. Pensate, misura 109,4 mm di lunghezza, 61,1 mm di altezza, 32,7 mm di larghezza e pesa solo 228 grammi.
Non è un caso se sono partito da dimensioni e peso che insieme alla funzione Snap Focus costituiscono il primo motivo del successo di questa giapponesina prodotta in Cina (da pochi mesi perché prima la facevano in Vietnam).
Poi c’è anche la tecnologia: 25,74 MP di risoluzione, obiettivo fisso 18,3 mm, f/2.8 (equivalente a un 28 mm su una fotocamera fullframe 35 mm), stabilizzatore a 5 assi. Ma non è per queste caratteristiche che uno street photographer decide di acquistarla.
Tempo per concedermi delle mezze giornate di shooting fotografico non ne ho mai avuto ma lei, così piccolina, l’avrei potuta tenere in tasca, e sicuramente lungo il tragitto per andare e tornare dal lavoro qualcosa di interessante da inserire nel mio portfolio sarebbe saltato fuori. Andava bene anche per la dieta e ha funzionato. Più foto e meno grasso: bingo!
L’altra cosa che vi dicevo, la funzione Snap Focus, fa sembrare la Ricoh GR la Colt di Tex Willer. Sapere cosa sono ISO, tempi, diaframmi e profondità di campo è fondamentale ma è parte di un bagaglio che non puoi ripassare quando in tre secondi devi estrarre, mettere a fuoco e… scattare. Mentre armeggi sulle ghiere qualcosa scappa sempre, e se sei concentrato sugli aspetti tecnici perdi anche l’ispirazione.
Lo Snap Focus ti consente di preimpostare la fotocamera in modo da garantirti la messa a fuoco entro un certo range, ad esempio da 2 metri all’infinito. In realtà tutte le fotocamere lo consentono ma sulla Ricoh GR puoi cambiare tempi e diaframmi e vedere graficamente in quale spazio di messa a fuoco sei. Questo ti dà un ampio margine creativo in qualsiasi condizione di luce.
Ho cercato di spiegarvi i due motivi per cui mi sto divertendo un sacco con la mia GR4: le dimensioni e la funzione Snap Focus. Così ho molto più tempo per concentrarmi su ciò che accade davanti ai miei occhi e che spesso dura solo un attimo o poco più.
Ricoh GR4, Tex’s camera
Ricoh Gr2, GR3, GR4… Since I discovered the Ricoh GR, I haven’t missed a model of thiscamera born for Street Photography. Just think, it measures 109.4 mm in length, 61.1 mm in height, 32.7 mm in width and weighs only 228 grams.
It is no coincidence that I started with size and weight which, together with the Snap Focus function, are the primary reasons for the success of this little Japanese camera produced in China (for a few months now, because before they made it in Vietnam).
Then there is also the technology: 25.74 MP resolution, 18.3 mm fixed lens, f/2.8 (equivalent to a 28 mm on a 35 mm full-frame camera), 5-axis stabilizer. But that’s not why a street photographer decides to buy it.
I’ve never had time for half-day photo shoots, but this camera, so small, I could keep it in my pocket, and surely along the way to and from work something interesting to include in my portfolio would have popped up. It was also good for the diet and it worked, More photos and less fat: bingo!
The other thing I mentioned, the Snap Focus function, makes the Ricoh GR seem like Tex Willer’s Colt. Knowing what ISO, shutter speeds, apertures and depth of field are is fundamental, but it is part of a background you can’t review when in three seconds you have to draw, focus and… shoot. While you fumble with the dials, something always escapes, and if you’re focused on technical aspects, you also lose inspiration.
Snap Focus allows you to preset the camera to guarantee focus within a certain range, for example from 2 meters to infinity. Actually all cameras allow it but on the Ricoh GR you can change shutter speeds and apertures and see graphically in which focus space you are. This gives you a wide creative margin in any light condition.
I have tried to explain the two reasons why I’m having a lot of fun with my Ricoh GR4: the size and the Snap Focus function. This way I have much more time to focus on what happens in front of my eyes and that often lasts only a moment or a little more.
