The nose doesn’t lie
The ceramic Basset Hound at the shop entrance has everything it needs to be a real dog: the size, the expressive wrinkles, and a gaze that begs for a shred of recognition. Yet nature’s verdict is ruthless: a small, scruffy pup passes by, offering its backside without granting even the benefit of an olfactory doubt. Zero interaction.
It is the definitive proof that mimesis, no matter how well-crafted, cannot fool the nose: you can look like a dog as much as you want, but to your own kind, you remain just a piece of furniture cluttering the way to its owner’s shopping trip. Yet, in this short circuit between biology and fiction, we humans remain caught. While the real dog pushes forward, that clay expression is enough to make us choose whose side we are on.
Truth and falsehood thus converge, intertwining in a state of mind that belongs only to those who can look beyond the physical matter. The simulacrum is left to guard a boundary it cannot cross, a motionless spectator of a world it does not belong to.
