Street Photography, Black and White.

The metaphor of life

The metaphor of life

I look out the window, but on the street only a shadow wrapped in a raincoat remains, slipping stealthily away. I return to the desk where, among dust and old Ilford film canisters, I placed the envelope slipped under the door by that mysterious man who fills our nights with his black and white shots. Tonight the photograph shows girls and boys climbing the slope of a hill, beneath a dense sky of clouds.

It is the metaphor of life, where each measures their own strength in an attempt to broaden a horizon that is not always clear. There are those who have almost conquered the summit and reach toward the infinite; those caught midway, focused on the effort, and those still only at the beginning of the climb.

It would be beautiful if the world welcomed everyone at the very same starting line, granting every single step the same momentum and the same chances; yet we know that destinies are born unequal, that the place we begin is never the same for all.

As I turn on the radio and tap on the microphone (it is almost time for our appointment), my gaze rests on an old postcard tucked into the mirror frame above the desk. It bears a line by Saint-Exupéry that is the truth within this snapshot: “Linked to our brothers by a common purpose… only then do we breathe.

Tonight I know exactly what to tell you, people of the night: the one ahead, just a breath before touching the peak, has the greatest task: to pause, turn around, and extend a hand to those left behind. Are you out there? Can you hear me?
