Siamo all’ultimo rullino, amici miei. Restate sintonizzati o spegnetevi del tutto. La scelta, come sempre, non è mia.

Jo Follia, the garret Manifesto
Who is Jo Follia? You are in my garret, a gap suspended above the hum of your lives. Here, the air smells of time rotting among thousands of negatives piled up like treasures saved from a flood. Don’t look for a location on your digital maps: I hunt my hideouts well, and this freezer is a non-place, the last outpost before the void. Dostoevsky spoke of the underground; I found this space between the tiles, crushed by the roof but close to the sky, where I manage to think without giving you too much importance.
Giorgio Montolli is the only one who knows the way. He is the one out there risking his skin to snatch the stardust that appears before the lens without warning; he is the one who slides his shots under my door. They are dioramas of a life that refuses to surrender to blindness, fragments of an enchantment that lasts only a heartbeat. I receive those prints, still damp from the fixer, turn on the microphone, and stubbornly begin broadcasting on the frequency of your distraction. I receive those prints still damp with fixer, turn on the microphone, and stubbornly begin to broadcast on the frequency of your distraction: Mayday, mayday, is anyone listening?
Why do I do it? Not out of anger, but for magic. Not to explain the world to you, but to tell you the secret of these spontaneous images. Without constraints, without metaphors. I speak to you of a rare beauty, and I do not resign myself to the oblivion of your gaze. My “death sentence” is when your eyes glide over these shots, because every distracted scroll is a molecule of oxygen leaving this room.
My expiration is not a date on the calendar; it is your oblivion. I broadcast as long as Giorgio’s messages pierce the wall of your white noise, saturated with burnt photos, as long as some of you still have the courage to stop and truly see what remains of the human.
We are on the last roll of film, my friends. Stay tuned or fade out completely. The choice, as always, is not mine.
