La visione urbana di Giorgio Montolli è un viaggio silenzioso tra le pieghe dell’ordinario, dove la città smette di essere solo uno sfondo per farsi palcoscenico di micro-storie sospese. Attraverso il rigore del bianco e nero, l’autore cattura un’umanità colta in momenti di autentica inconsapevolezza: un gesto rubato in un caffè, l’attesa immobile davanti a una vetrina o il dinamismo improvviso di un monopattino che taglia l’inquadratura.
Lo sguardo di Montolli sembra operare una scomposizione geometrica dello spazio, in cui luci e ombre definiscono nuovi confini emotivi. Non c’è mai giudizio, ma una profonda empatia nel descrivere la solitudine, il gioco, il lavoro e l’amore che pulsano nelle strade. È una fotografia che invita a rallentare, rivelando la straordinaria bellezza che si cela nel quotidiano di ognuno di noi.

The urban vision of Giorgio Montolli is a silent journey through the folds of the ordinary, where the city ceases to be a mere backdrop and becomes a stage for suspended micro-stories. Through the rigor of black and white, the author captures humanity in moments of authentic unawareness: a stolen gesture in a café, the motionless waiting in front of a shop window, or the sudden dynamism of a scooter cutting across the frame.
Montolli’s gaze seems to perform a geometric decomposition of space, where light and shadow define new emotional boundaries. There is never judgment, but rather a profound empathy in describing the solitude, the play, the labor, and the love pulsing through the streets. It is photography that invites us to slow down, revealing the extraordinary beauty hidden within the daily lives of us all.

Esploratore instancabile (un po’ anche flâneur) della propria città, Giorgio Montolli ne restituisce in uno spoglio, ma assai persuasivo bianco e nero (“Il mondo è a colori, ma la realtà è in bianco e nero” sosteneva Wim Wenders), un contorno diverso attraverso dettagli apparentemente marginali che privilegiano gli elementi della quotidianità e della contemporaneità architettonica più delle ovvie “mura e gli archi e le colonne”. Nei suoi passages scaligeri Giorgio più che vedere osserva (due sinonimi soltanto per i superficiali, come insegnavano le mie indimenticabili maestre delle elementari), aggiungendovi un’attenzione maggiore e una idea di durata. Con l’occhio della sua Ricoh fissa e conserva schegge del reale che lo sguardo di routine non coglie, lo interpreta e lo ricostruisce: ne è quindi autore, nel senso più vero della parola.

A restless explorer (and something of a flâneur) of his own city, Giorgio Montolli captures its essence in a stark yet deeply persuasive black and white — recalling Wim Wenders’ claim that ‘The world is in color, but reality is in black and white.’ He renders a different outline of the city through seemingly marginal details, prioritizing elements of everyday life and architectural contemporaneity over the obvious ‘walls, arches, and columns.’ In his Veronese passages, Giorgio does not merely see; he observes (two synonyms only for the superficial, as my unforgettable elementary school teachers taught me), adding a deeper focus and a sense of permanence. Through the lens of his Ricoh, he fixes and preserves fragments of reality that the routine gaze fails to catch, interpreting and reconstructing them: he is, therefore, an author in the truest sense of the word.

Al di là delle evidenti capacità tecniche, le foto di Giorgio Montolli hanno un’impronta che mi ricorda un po’ Cartier Bresson. In particolare ci vedo il senso vivo dell’umanità, colta di sorpresa in chi passa o lavora, e come sospesa fra naturalezza e un po’ di magia.

Beyond his evident technical skills, Giorgio Montolli’s photographs have a hallmark that reminds me somewhat of Cartier-Bresson. In particular, I see a vivid sense of humanity, caught by surprise in those passing by or working, and somehow suspended between naturalness and a touch of magic.

Verona con gli occhi di un veronese. Foto geniali, mai scontate, che ricordano molto Cartier Bresson. Rese possibili grazie ad alcuni elementi: Giorgio si muove tanto a piedi con la sua fida Ricoh in tasca, l’occhio vigile e pronto, il cuore e l’entusiasmo di chi si sa meravigliare, sempre, anche con qualche primavera sulle spalle. Come diceva HCB, fotografare è mettere sulla stessa linea di mira occhio-mente-cuore. Bravo Giorgio. Merita una mostra.

Verona through the eyes of a local. Brilliant, never predictable photos that strongly call to mind Cartier-Bresson. These shots are made possible by a few key elements: Giorgio covers a lot of ground on foot with his trusty Ricoh in his pocket, his eye alert and ready, and the heart and enthusiasm of someone who still knows how to marvel at the world, even with a few more ‘springs’ behind him. As HCB used to say, to photograph is to put on the same line of sight the eye, the mind, and the heart. Well done, Giorgio. This work deserves an exhibition.

In alcune foto di Giorgio Montolli ho ritrovato lo spirito e l’atmosfera dei dipinti di Edward Hopper, ma con meno melanconia e più lirismo. Infatti, le rappresentazioni dei grandi monumenti e degli spazi storici di Verona, con la presenza delle persone, e in particolare dei bambini, ci offrono spunti poetici e di speranza.
Il fotografo è riuscito a cogliere il genius loci, lo spirito del luogo, strappando il velo dei negozi, della frenesia consumistica e dell’affollamento turistico che lo nasconde, per mostrare gli angoli e gli spazi esistenziali che si possono ancora trovare, nonostante le violenze che la città sta subendo.

In some of Giorgio Montolli’s photographs, I found the spirit and atmosphere of Edward Hopper’s paintings, but with less melancholy and more lyricism. Indeed, the depictions of Verona’s great monuments and historic spaces, with the presence of people, especially children, offer us poetic and hopeful insights.
The photographer managed to capture the genius loci, the spirit of the place, tearing away the veil of shops, consumerist frenzy, and tourist crowds that hide it, to reveal the corners and existential spaces that can still be found, despite the violence the city is suffering.
