Female chiaroscuro
Nel cortile di Palazzo di Cansignorio a Verona, a metà giugno, due ragazze si scambiano confidenze sedute sulla piastra di pietra che copre l’antico pozzo. Lo spazio è definito da materiali della tradizione: il selciato in ciottoli di fiume, le arcate in mattoni e, sullo sfondo, il rivestimento in lastre di pietra che rifinisce la base del palazzo.
L’elemento centrale della foto è l’intreccio tra la luce e i vestiti delle protagoniste. La ragazza con l’abito chiaro è colpita dal sole, mentre la compagna in abiti scuri resta nell’ombra. Questo legame tra l’intensità luminosa e le tonalità dei tessuti fonde le figure umane alla materia circostante, in una dialettica degli opposti che sembra quasi dividere il resto della scena, spingendo le sfumature grigie a scegliere tra il rigore del nero e la forza del bianco.
In questo scatto, il chiarore e l’oscurità convivono definendosi a vicenda attraverso un legame indissolubile. È una dualità che appartiene alla natura delle cose e che richiama l’espressione artistica — evocando la lezione di Caravaggio — dove il contrasto non è una frattura, ma il terreno su cui le diverse tonalità di luce e ombra dialogano per dare vita alla narrazione e all’equilibrio dell’immagine.

In the courtyard of Palazzo di Cansignorio in Verona, in mid-June, two young women share confidences, sitting on the stone plate that covers the ancient well. The space is defined by traditional materials: the river cobblestone pavement, the brick arches, and, in the background, the stone slab cladding that finishes the base of the palace.
The central element of the photo is the intertwining of light and the clothing of the protagonists. The girl in light-colored clothing is struck by the sun, while her companion in dark clothing remains in the shadow. This link between light intensity and the tones of the fabrics merges the human figures with the surrounding matter, in a dialectic of opposites that almost seems to divide the rest of the scene, nudging the grey shades to choose between the rigour of black and the strength of white.
In this shot, brightness and darkness coexist, defining one another through an indissoluble bond. It is a duality that belongs to the nature of things and recalls artistic expression — evoking the lessons of Caravaggio — where the contrast is not a fracture, but the ground upon which the different tones of light and shadow engage in a dialogue to bring the image’s narrative and balance to life.
