Cara Matilde ti scrivo

Street Photography, Black and White.

Dear Matilde, I write to you

Deat Matilde, I write to you

It is very late, and the cats have started hunting who-knows-what among the attic tiles. The day was lost in the yellowed pages of an old school diary, a labyrinth of nostalgia made of faded names, Polaroid snapshots, fierce political passions, and those loves so eternal and so ethereal. I wonder why I persist in keeping this stuff: it is toxic.

But here is the envelope sliding under the door, as often happens on these nights where the moon reveals the secrets it flushes out from the darkness. I open it, observe the photo you brought me and my breath catches: it is as if the ink of my memories had materialized in this black and white, filling that gap that was left empty in my life. Matilde is the exact reflection of what I was looking for and could not find among my ghosts. It is this invisible bridge stretched by fate that forces me to pick up the pen.

“Dear Matilde, I write to you as the daughter I never had, and I am already wrong to use that verb, because you are a daughter of the stars, of a mystery where conception is only the neck of the bottle that flings you into the world. Jeans, headphones, a phone and a bag with school books… you are sitting next to me, leaning against the window that separates us. Only a few millimeters: me with my coffee that repeats every day at the same time, in the same bar, and you who happen to arrive carried by the wind, so sparkling, so alive, and so truly beautiful…”.

But dreams cannot be tamed, and the words do not come to me. I break the spell and let it fall into the bin, abruptly returning to the present. I turn on the radio and approach the microphone. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you what happened to me tonight,” I whisper to the sleeping city, “so I’ll spare you the trouble and talk about something else entirely.”

Certain truths lose their fragrance if shared.
